In the run up to Justin Trudeau becoming Prime Minister I had the honour to direct and produce a series of videos. We travelled the country from Vancouver to Halifax. In each location I had a small crew—two cameras, sound and a swing. This was a series of videos for luxury car maker, Genesis. The campaign's tagline was "it's about time", meaning you think something should happen soon or should already have happened. For my crew and myself, it meant something slightly different. The two-day schedule was tight, but doable. Our pre-production plan was solid. We were confident. Then it rained. Everyone—from client to crew—rolled with it. An afternoon of exteriors quickly became interiors. The location was a beautiful open concept design in Mississauga which made for an easy pivot. Two teams working at maximum efficiency. The challenge with this type of shoot is to make it look good, but do it fast. I tend to light a 'space' (rather than people), so this makes it easier. I also don't make it complicated. For example, the scene where Roxy and Tracy talk at the kitchen table was side lit with a Cinemills LED Sufa Bullet 800 through an 8x8 silk. We were against a window and I wanted enough level to hold the background. The only other 'source' was a bounce card in front of talent to add some soft light from the front. Simple. Then Mother Nature brought out the sun and added a beautiful backlight.
